Pasifika Youth Pre-Apprenticeship Courses

Learner Focused Training was contracted by Oceania Career Academy to help design and deliver programmes which focused on helping Pasifika youth become work/ apprenticeship ready.

OUR GOALS

Learner Focused Training grew out of a need to help Pasifika Apprentices enrolled in the National Certificate in Carpentry.

To help Pasifika Youth become life ready (to guide them towards broader awareness, better attitudes, and a better work ethic)

To allow the students to complete a qualification to lead to further educational achievement and apprenticeships.

To create a programme of study that stretches the students but does not overload them. This course needed to be enjoyable and fun to keep them engaged, and it needed to meet their specific learning and cultural needs.

To meet the needs of the NZ Construction industry and provide them with an available workforce with the desired attitudes, work ethics, knowledge, and necessary skills they require.

WHAT WE DID:

We developed courses that met the requirements of BCAT’s Level 1 and 2 and GATEWAY.

We developed course materials to suit the students cultural and learning needs.

We ordered tools and materials and setting up a workshop with practical stations with tasks that would provide learning opportunities.

We presented our course materials using methods that the students enjoyed and accepted.

We assessed each student using an integrated assessment model.

We liaised with the BCITO, Skills Org, GATEWAY coordinators (for 4 Auckland high schools), OCA management and staff, and the wider construction industry.

While LFT is not currently running the Pasifika Pre Apprenticeship courses, we would gladly look at rerunning these in the future.
