I’m new to LFT carpentry classes, do I have to start with Stage 1?
No, you can start at any stage, as no stage is more difficult than any other. LFT classes are delivered in 10-week cycles that repeat, e.g., Stage 1 is followed by Stage 2, which is followed by Stage 3, which is followed by Stage 1 again.
It does not matter which stage you start on; if you consistently attend on the same day of the week, you will eventually cover all the topics.
LFT classes are run each evening from Monday to Thursday. We recommend you set aside one evening a week that doesn’t clash with your other activities and keep coming to class.
How long is each LFT course?
Carpentry Level 5 – 3 x 10-week courses, one evening per week
Supervisor Level 5 – 1 x 10-week course, one morning per week
Frame & Truss – 1 x 10-week course, one afternoon per week
Who can attend the Carpentry classes?
The carpentry classes are for carpentry apprentices enrolled with the BCITO
These people vary in length of time in the industry, experience level, and cultural background. Many people struggle with their coursework and assessments and need help. Others like the opportunity to learn in a group with other like-minded people.
What is the difference between General Carpentry and Learning Support Classes?
General Classes cover all knowledge/ theory areas required for the National Certificate in Carpentry.
As there are many topics to cover in a 10-week stage, the classes are faster-paced and run slightly longer (between 1.5 and 2 hours, depending on the topic). Due to the demand, these classes are held in larger groups.
Learning Support covers the same topics, but these sessions are shorter in duration and slower paced. The classes are smaller and limited to 15 people to encourage discussion and ensure everyone understands before we move on.
Does LFT tailor to people’s different cultural needs and English language needs?
Yes, we try. We have general classes, Māori and Pasifika classes, and Filipino classes. We aim to create comfortable and safe learning environments with fewer barriers to sharing and learning from each other. These slower-paced sessions offer extra support with understanding key carpentry topics and Kiwi building terminology.
Are there in-person, face-to-face classes?
All LFT classes are delivered online using Zoom Video Conferencing. This method was adopted due to COVID-19 and has effectively eliminated travel time and allowed participants to attend from the comfort of their own homes. We are currently not running any in-person classes.
Are the LFT classes like school?
No, if they are, we have not done our job correctly. LFT classes are highly interactive. They are discussion-based and involve group work through the course content. Our classes are not lectures where you passively sit and take notes. You will be asked to share your knowledge and discuss topics with the class when you can.
What is the cost of attending LFT classes?
For this year, BCITO is offering LFT Carpentry and Supervisor classes for free to apprentices and supervisors signed into appropriate BCITO courses.
What equipment do I need to attend LFT classes?
To join the classes, you will need access to your own Wi-Fi, a computer or laptop with a camera, and/or a mobile device.
Can I attend a trial class?
Yes, you can attend your first class without obligation to see if it works for you.
